Metservice have forecast a significant amount of north-west rain to fall in the Canterbury High Country from Sunday 17 July (afternoon) through until Tuesday 19 July (afternoon) . This heavy rain is expected south of Arthurs Pass and within 30 km east of the main divide. It is unusual for heavy spillover rain to extend this far east of the divide, and we expect it will impact some of our foothill rivers, as well as the usual large alpine rivers.
A rising freezing level through the event and melting snow is likely to increase runoff and river flows beyond what might usually occur.
In South Canterbury, the Rangitata, Ahuriri, and all other rivers and streams originating from the main divide are expected to be carrying high flows from Monday to Wednesday. Some foothill rivers including the Orari, Opihi, Opuha, Twizel, and Omarama Stream can also expect high flows. At this time, flows are expected to be contained in the upper Waitaki hydro lake system, and spill flows into the lower Waitaki River are not currently forecast.
Further north, the Ashburton River South Branch and North Branch are likely to see flows that test the still vulnerable flood protection works in the upper reaches of the scheme from Monday to Wednesday. High flows are expected in the Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers.
This is early indication of rivers that are likely to be most affected by this event. Some other rivers and streams in the region not mentioned above may also see some impacts, but at this stage we expect them to be significantly less.
We encourage those with property adjacent to rivers that may be affected to closely monitor their own situation, and move stock away from flood prone areas.
This message will be updated throughout the event. For up-to-date weather forecasts go to www.metservice.com
